Along with the CalChamber and the CA Manufacturing Association, we have communicated support of SB 834 (Huff; R-Diamond Bar) which would exempt from the requirements of CEQA the retooling or alteration for manufacturing purposes of an existing manufacturing facility within its existing footprint. SB 834 incentivizes the modernization of existing manufacturing facilities to maintain and create much needed manufacturing jobs. Contrary to conventional wisdom, manufacturing jobs are very much prevalent in the State of California. According to the National Association of Manufacturers, manufacturers account for over 11 percent of the total output in the state, employing almost 9 percent of the workforce. In addition, manufacturing compensation is nearly 70 percent higher than other nonfarm employers in the state. The bill has been recently introduced and does not yet have a committee assignment.
