1972 – 50 years of service to the commercial industrial retail real estate industry – 2022.

July 22, 2015

Since 2010, local jurisdictions have been required to enforce DWR’s Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (MWELO) or adopt an ordinance of their own which is more stringent. At the direction of the Governor, the Department of Water Resources staff conducted a fast-track update of the state MWELO.

Draft amendments to the ordinance were issued on June 12th, and after reviewing 170 comments, DWR Staff issued an updated document which was adopted unanimously by the California Water Commission on Wednesday, July 15th. The updated DWR ordinance will take effect throughout the state on December 1, 2015.

A summary of the updated provisions is being prepared and will be made available early next week. The headline, however, in the commercial setting, is don’t plant sod unless you are going to walk on it, play on it, sit on it, or roll around on it. If it is just there for looks, you should be looking at more water efficient landscaping options.
