  • HOMELESS CAMPING BILL

AB 718 (Chu; D-San Jose) seeks to prohibit local agencies from enforcing ordinances that prohibit the people from sleeping or resting in a parked motor vehicle (including in your parking lots). This bill was “killed” last year due to lack of votes, but it has been removed from the inactive file in an attempt by the bill sponsors, Housing California, to revive it.

The bill is on Third Reading and can be taken up at any time.  We are working with allies from local government and law enforcement to make the case this bill is not a viable policy for reducing homeless issues and would probably exacerbate the problem.  At this point we don’t believe the bill’s chances have improved, but will remain vigilant.

The Legislature has until next Wednesday to work through all bills on the floor.
