Today, our sources with NAIOP attending the meeting, report that the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Board voted to pursue legislation to give them the authority to put a sales tax measure on the ballot. The tax could be as high as 1 percent, on top of all other current sales taxes.

Any new tax would cover portions of LA, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties and all of Orange County. SCAQMD states they are seeking to raise $1 billion a year for 14 years for unspecified air quality improvement efforts. While some of the members of the SCAQMD Board are elected officials, they are all appointed. If approved by the legislature, this action would give an entity of appointed officials that currently have no taxing authority the brand-new right to tax you.
