The Legislature is gone and the proverbial “ball” is now in the Governor’s “court.”  And he has hundreds upon hundreds of bills to deal with.  He has until the end of this month to wade through them all.  Below are some quick updates on bills we are waiting for action on.

The governor has signed AB 1522 (Gonzalez) Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014.  The bill requires nearly all California employers to provide a minimum of three paid sick days to their workers who meet certain requirements.  The bill goes into effect on July 1, 2015, and will be the nation’s largest expansion of this employee benefit

    ***ACTION*** AB 1897 VETO REQUEST!

Posted by Crystal Whitfield | No Comments

On the Governor’s desk is another public employee union-backed measure that we, along with a very large business coalition oppose and are urging the Governor to Veto.  AB 1897 (Hernandez) forces one company to essentially insure the wage and hour obligations and workers’ compensation coverage, of a separate employer’s employees, which will discourage the use of contractors and their employees.

AB 1897 holds an innocent business liable for the employment obligations of another employer ad will create significant litigation.  We believe that adequate protections already exist for documented problems with contracting.  We strongly urge a veto.

We urge you to send (snail mail – not email or fax!) a letter to the Governor.  Click here for an example letter.

The Water Bond will be on the November Ballow at Proposition 1.  The measure replaces a previously planned water bond that was pulled from the ballot, with a $7.5 billion bond. We support this new measure and congratulate and thank those under the Capitol Dome for coming together to make this happen.
